2002. Tie. 6 Pts. each.
2003. Kettering won 10.5 - 4.5
2004.
Tee-To-Green won 9 - 6.
This Annual challenge took place at Mowsbury Golf Club, Bedford on Friday 3rd June 2005. As ever the competition was fierce but fair ....
The morning consisted of Four Ball Better Ball matches. Kettering's 'Dream Team' of Will & Tom put in a nightmare performance, and were hammered 6 & 5 by Paul and Steve. Chris Filby was making his debut, and played a superb first 9 holes. This - along with his partner Andy twice pitching in - put the Fantasists 4 up after 9, and they closed the match out by 4 & 3. Lloyd & Rod (the new 'Dreem Teem' ...) played very well in winning 5 & 3. The tightest battle went all the way ; Jim & Don ending up All Square with Don & Mick. Thus the situation was level at lunch.

2.5 Pts. each.
Tee-To-Green got off to an early afternoon lead, winning the first 2 Singles. Lloyd and Rod were again strong, and the whole match was looking very tight. It all came down to the final few holes in the last 2 matches out on the course.
Andy was 1 up at the turn, then played very well to win 4 & 3. Chris was having a classic against Mick. 3 Up at one stage, Mick battled back to All Square. As the rain pelted down, the Par 3 17th was an almighty struggle - into the wind & rain. Mick won it with a 6 against Chris' 7 ... At around the same time both Will and Tom were All Square playing 18. Both lost the hole ; and thus the Cup slipped through The Fantasists fingers ......
It had been a thoroughly enjoyable day enjoyed by all (well, maybe not Will and Tom !?!).

TEE TO GREEN 9The 3rd Annual match ended in a close win for the Bedford based Tee To Green Society. Will & his best buddy Tommy Campbell got things off to a storming start for Kettering, but steady play from Tee To Green gave them a lunchtime lead. Chris & Dave had a very tight match against Maurice & Tim, ending up All Square.
The afternoon saw a few runaway wins mixed in with close finishes. Nigel 'Hurricane' Mundy was making his debut. He struggled a bit in the opening 18, but was firing on all cylinders after his hearty lunch, and was 1 Up coming to 18. He made a hash of the last to tie with Peter. Tom battled all the way to win on the last against Maurice. Andy birdied 2 of the first 4 holes, but was still only 1 Up v Mick. It was a superb match that was eventually won 2 Up at 18 by Andy. The real drama occured in the Don v John game. Towards the end Don played the wrong ball on the green (!?!). This cost him the hole and probably the match.
Everyone enjoyed their day - even the weather was just right. The only downside for Andy was having to present 'The Fat Boy' with 2 prizes at the end ........ (apparently one of the rules of this Match is that anyone who wins 2 prizes automatically is cut by 2 shots next time round !!).
So it's now 1 victory each & a tie in the 3 years of this event... Roll on 2005 !!
June '03 Match.

A very enjoyable day was had by all, and Paul Stacey's boys will be out for revenge when the 3rd match takes place on 4th June 2004.

Winning Captain Andy Webster is presented with the Trophy by Tee-To-Green Supremo Paul Stacey.

Andy has got his Team Members in SERIOUS training for the June '03 Match ... The Dav even popped up to St Andrews for a quick 18 holes on The Old Course !!!
THE MATCH.
Annual 36 hole Challenge ; Andy Webster & Dave Webb v Tom Campbell & Will McLacken.
WINNERS.
2001. Tom & Will
2002. Andy & Dave
The '03 match was played on 9th May at the Par 72 Pavenham Golf Course. The format was combined score Stapleford off of full Handicap (Andy 12, Dave 18, Tom 18, Will 20).
Andy and Dave went ahead early in the morning when they both birdied the Par 5 2nd hole. This put them 4 Points ahead. Will and Tom levelled after 6, but were again 3 Points down at the turn. Dave and Andy each parred 2 of the first 3 on the back nine to increase the lead to 6 Points. Coming to the last this lead had been reduced to 4, and amazingly all players parred the 18th.
Morning Scores.
Andy 83
Will 86
Dave 87
Tom 95
The first green at Pavenham has an absolute nightmare slope on it ; somehow in the afternoon Andy, Will and Tom all holed great putts here ! The 2nd saw a rare disaster for Mr Webster ; a terrible tee-shot led to a 1 putt nine (this was probably Will & Tom's favourite moment of the day ...).
Despite this Dave and Andy took an early lead and were 3 Points ahead after 9 holes. Will had been playing solidly all day (dodgy 20 or what !!) and went into overdrive on the last nine. He scored a 4 over 40 - nearly driving the 17th and getting a birdie. Tom also roared home in 41, leaving Andy and Dave blitzed. On the back nine Will and Tom scored an incredible 46 Points.
Afternoon Scores.
Will 86
Andy 87
Tom 88
Dave 91
This made it one game all - and a 3 hole Play-Off beckoned !
The Dav had faded badly (in more ways than one ...) towards the end of the afternoon, and by now had long ago eaten all of The Dawn's reviving cake. He nipped into the Clubhouse and purchased a much needed Kitkat.
The play-Off was pure drama all the way.
Hole 1.
Dave bombs out. Andy hits a peach of a 5 Wood, Will mucks it
up from just off of the green.
Will & Tom 1 Point ahead.
Hole 2.
Tom slashes a wild drive miles right, and loses the ball.
Andy gets stuck in a bunker, Dave and Will each Par the hole.
Will &
Tom 1 Point ahead.
Hole 3.
A long Par 3, with Out Of Bounds literally a few yards to
the left all down the hole.
Tom, Will and Dave are all within 20-30 yards
of the green, but not on it. Andy rips a 5 Wood ; it keeps straight on the left
edge of the green then kicks left towards the O-of-B.
He hits a provisional
just through the green.
Dave spots Andy's ball lying in mud - and there is
a G.U.R. sign there !! The looks on Tom and Will's faces were a picture ....
oh, deep joy ! Will duffs a chip, then 3 putts. Andy drops, and pitches to back
of green. Dave has an eight footer for the match, and it slips by. Andy has a 4
footer to win, and in it goes.
What a day - and what a dramatic finish to a great day's golf ......

8 Players per side.
(Morning ; 4 x 4 Ball
Betterball.
Afternoon ; 8 Singles)
After many organizational problems, Team Captains Paul Stacey and Andy Webster somehow managed to get their Players to the starting line on time ...
The morning went well for The Fantasists. Chris and Don won a close match, as did Tom and Ross. Will went off like a train ; birdie at the first, net birdie at the second, and this early advantage led to him and Dave winning by 6 & 4 (this despite some fine play by Maurice). Will ended up recording his best ever score of 84.
At the rear of the field a battle royale was taking place. The lead swung backwards and forwards in the match that pitted Andy and Keith against Paul and Pete. Incredibly only 2 of the 18 holes were halved. The Kettering boys were 1 Up coming to the Par 3 17th ; and when Keith played his shot of the day to put the ball only 5 feet away it looked all over ! Amazingly Pete knocked his Tee Shot to around 7 feet - and holed for a birdie. Keith missed, and it was level playing the last. This was fittingly how it ended.
Chris Daniels & Don Webster beat Tony Gammon

Ross Campbell & Tom Campbell beat Brian

If anyone thought it was all over at lunch, the drama was yet to come ...
As the Afternoon matches progressed, news filtered around the course of a stunning Tee-To Green fightback (Paul 'Mark James' Stacey's Pep Talk must have been a good one ...).
Keith was having a Seaman (aka nightmare), and Roland also got in an early blow.
Maurice played very well, making a couple of amazing recoveries on the back nine to see off Andy. Tom had a great battle against Paul, only to lose at the 17th.
The ever unpredictable Dave Webb was unpredictably steady in claiming a last hole victory. The same was crucially registered by Chris 'Two For One' Daniels.
It all boiled down to the Fantasy Veteran Don Webster against Pete Daniels. Don was ahead near halfway, but faded to be 1 Down coming to the 18th. The last match out all day, and everything rested on it ... After each having 4 shots, Pete was around 7 feet away and Don 5. Pete's putt slipped by. Don now faced the ultimate pressure putt to halve his game, and level the overall match !
After setting up he (a la Doug Sanders) bent down and removed an imaginery impediment from the line. As the hushed crowd watched on, Don smoothly rolled the ball into the hole without the merest hint of a twitch. What a finish !!!!!

What a climax to a great day that was thoroughly enjoyed by all.
This will become an Annual Event ... roll on next year !!!!!
The 2003 Event is taking place on Friday 6 June at Mowsbury Golf Course, Bedford. (Currently talks are taking place with Sky Sports re Live coverage. Spectators are welcome ...).

Amazingly there were no late withdrawals from the tournament, and the field of 12 assembled at 8am for 36 holes of golf.
Star of the morning round was Don "I'm not ready for the Seniors Tour yet" Webster. He had a storming round (including a birdie) and ended up leading on 43 Points. Dave 'dodgy handicap' Webb kept his 'Duval-like' shades on all day (along with one of Dawn's rejected hats !) and his 38 Points put him into 2nd spot at lunch - although in reality Dave's lunch had begun at around 9.30am when he started on the fruit cake he had stashed in his bag ...
There was a Nearest The Pin Competition on the short 9th - amazingly in the morning nobody even hit the green ! Bill Hedrick had mistakenly thought it was 'Nearest The Road To Bedford'; and his ball was well on the way there when last seen. He was later heard to be muttering about wanting the money back on his David Leadbetter video.

The heat was blistering all day, and in the end probably caught up with Don, who wasn't able to sustain his morning form.
Tom 'I never moan about people's handicaps - but whilst we're on the subject...' Campbell (for a profile of this 'All-Round Sportsman' go to Snooker Page !!) was making a big move, booming away some of his trademark massive drives. Tom has played more golf this year than many professionals (a few weeks back he played 11 rounds in 2 weeks) and his frequent Pars each brought him 3 Points on Stapleford.
Nearest The Pin looked destined to go to Andy Webster when he hit a glorious (sic !!) iron to around 6 feet, but this was beaten just minutes later by a wonderous shot from Paul which was only 4 feet from the hole. (Tom seemed much more excited about Andy NOT winning the bottle of wine than about his own good round !!).
Simon Lee was playing very well (despite struggling both times on the fairly easy Par 5 1st hole, and almost certainly having had his ball 'nicked' by someone on the afternoon round. NB. Even Will 'Fatboy' McLaughlan doesn't pinch balls, unless he's 50 % certain than they have been lost.).
Simon had scored 82 first time round, and bettered this with a pm 79. That's very impressive golf - especially off of 12 ... (We'll remember that next year ..!?!).

PLAYER PROFILE.
DAVID 'DUVAL' WEBB.

HANDICAP ; Debatable !! Anywhere between 16 & 19.
STYLE ; Variable !! One of the most consistently-inconsistent Golfers out there. His scoring changes wildly ; could easily take 99 one day, then shoot 85 the next.
CLOTHING ; Often can be seen in (dodgy) hat and shades - rumour has it that this is in case The Dawn is out on the course looking for him. Not yet gone as far as wearing a false beard ...
MOST LIKELY TO SAY ;
Early In Round. "I'll just have a piece of
fruit cake now."
Middle Of Round. "I've finished all of the fruit cake."
On Last Hole. "Andy - do you think we'll have time to squeeze in a few
frames after this ??"
LEAST LIKELY TO SAY ;
"Well, it's the 4th hole and I don't feel
hungry yet ..."
Dave Webb is a regular contributor to the kwffl Snooker Page. If you
would like to know his latest thoughts/predictions/ramblings then that is the
place to go next !!
As Dave himself would say "Keep On Potting !!"
