K.W.F.F.L. HALL OF FAME

'BIG' PETE CROOKES

If ever the term 'big' belonged to anyone, it was Pete Crookes. Big in heart, big in girth, big in breakfast...it was a tragedy when he died on 20th November 1995

In many ways, we may not have the K.W.F.F.L. were it not for Pete - a founder member and enthusiast when others took a lot of convincing. Each season it was a close run thing as to which would total the higher; his team's points score or the number of double vodka and oranges he consumed at his beloved 'commune'.

In the first season, Pete managed Crookes' Crushers to Runners-up spot in both league and cup. Much of his '93 Summer was spent holed up in a caravan at Heacham with Rog and Fiona - the other two members of the infamous trio. From this den of alcohol and abuse emerged Percy's Plodders. Despite rumours to the contrary, Pete never did have that Souness - style perm... The Plodders lived up to their name, losing in the cup first round and finishing bottom of the league. Something had to give and Rog (aka Percy) was axed from managerial affairs. The team now became classically named 'Grey Army'. An improved performance followed - most of the campaign was spent in 3rd spot until a late surge saw them finish as runners-up. The Grey Army reached the cup semi-finals. '95-96 was a very average season: 5th in the league and once again biting the dust in the cup semis.

Pete truly loved life, football, beer, vodka and music. Always one of the 'oldest swingers in town' he was ideal to take to see bands as he made the rest of us feel younger... He was into many bands, but i'll always remember going to see The Happy Mondays at Leicester Poly with him. The place was packed and Pete must have lost at least a stone in sweat that night.

Pete Crookes...rave on.

IAN 'SON' BLAND

Son's Slashers joined the league at the start of the '93 - '94 campaign. They completed 4 seasons in all, and amazingly were never higher than 3rd in the league at any stage. The real drama for son, however, occured in the cup... In their first season the slashers finished a respectable 3rd with 290 points. In the cup they progressed to the semis; son was ahead until a last minute goal from the Allstars Andy Cole put the Slashers out 8 - 7

Thoughout the '94 - '95 campaign son was in mid - table and he finished with 351 points. Once again he was eliminated from the cup in dramatic circumstances. Ahead until the dying minutes, son was squeezed out when an injury-time goal against Man. Utd. was very questionably disallowed. This enabled Schmeicel (Wanderer's) to keep his crucial clean sheet.

Feeling in need of a Co-Manager, Sonny recruited James Piazza for '95 -'96. At the auction Son paid a (then) record fee of £4m for Alan Shearer. After a poor start, the Slashers spent most of the season in third spot and this was where they finished with 363 points. The incredible Cup record continued; in what is still regarded as 'The Greatest Cup Tie Ever' The Slashers were defeated 21 - 20 by the Grey Army.

'96 - '97 was a disaster in the league, finishing last with 280 points. Unbelievably in the cup the Slashers semi against the Allstars went to the last minute before Son was eliminated by the mega score of 1 against -1.

Ian 'Son' Bland was a K.W.F.F.L. fan from the start. He loved spending his money - in the end was the burden of having spent £80 million and still not won a trophy too big a burden for him to bear??

THE K.W.F.F.L. HALL OF FAME.

Those of you who have hunted round www.kwffl.co.uk will probably have come across The Hall Of Fame. Entry is granted very occasionally to people who have contributed greatly - one way or another - to our League. Currently there are 3 members ; 'Big' Pete Crookes, Ian 'Son' Bland & Andy 'The Jumper' Halliwell. Today a 4th person is added.

Dean Haylett joined us at the start of the '93/'94 Campaign (Season 2). Initially helped by his son (not 'Son' ..), then in later years by Bill 'I'ii Get Round In Under 100 One Day' Hedrick. Throughout the past 12 years Deano has spent the best part of £240 million without having had even a sniff of a trophy ... even Roman Ambamovitch would have expected some sort of return on that sort of money ! Indeed it was many years before The Harriers even won a match in the Cup. Dean's enthusiasm has never wavered at any stage.

Twice The Harriers have finished a distant 3rd in the League. In the mid-90's Dean stated that "Haylett's H. are destined to win the Title by the year 2000 !!"

As I always say to people, The K.W.F.F.L. is about much more than football. The debate and interest it causes week in week out year after year is priceless. It totally changes the way you watch and think about football. How we love The Cat (or even Susan Denier !?!) leaving Messages in The Boardroom ... The Website adds so much but we wouldn't have that without Dean.

I remember the evening many years ago when we started the Site (it had some great long complicated name then, no snappy domain name in those days !), what a struggle it was getting anything up and running ; then Dean forgot our Password !!!! Disaster ....

Gradually the Site evolved, we became kwffl.co.uk and it has become the monster it is today. Sometimes it's easy to take it for granted. After all, how many people do you know who run their own Websites ??? I still get lots of comments from people hitting it for the first time saying what a great Site it is.

The Scores & Info are e-mailed to Dean (the WebWizard), and always are very quickly put up for the world to view.

I can't say that I don't want to win The League each Season, because I do !!! ... but I can honestly say (to quote Kevin Keegan) that I would "Love It, Just Love It" for The Harriers to do it one year ! I've promised Dean a nice bottle of Champagne when (if) this ever happens.

Haylett's Harriers are K.W.F.F.L. Legends, and The K.W.F.F.L. wouldn't be the same without Deano. Nobody deserves to be in The Hall Of Fame more than him.

A.W.
